10.15.12 PSYCH!!! and CLASsy Times!

Here's a recap of the past couple of TTA weeks:

10/8/12  "The CLASsiest of the CLASsy"

This week's episode highlighted the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) advising office, with representatives Robert Mercer (Assistant Dean of CLAS) and Ben Alberts, academic adviser.  Truly, an informative and entertaining time, learning all about the ins and outs of the CLAS advising office.  And when the pressure was on and our guests were asked to name all of the departments within their college, they passed the test with FLYING colors!  And during the Bernard Pivot questionnaire, we all learned that Robert is a big fan of the sauce (not that sauce!), MARINARA sauce.  And Ben does NOT like when the words creamy or buttery are used to describe non food items, hmmmm... yeah, I'm still not sure about that one.  If you're intrigued now, tune into the podcast of the show on kpsu.org.

For all of your CLAS advising needs, you can contact the office by calling 503-725-3822 or you can stroll on by in person, they are located in the Smith Memorial Student Union, room M305.

10/15/12  "PSYCH!!!"

If you couldn't tell by the title, this week's episode was all things Psychology, with our special guests Casey Campbell, academic adviser in the Psychology Department, and Ryan Dickers, a peer adviser within Psychology.

Another epic time with our guests, where we discussed some of Casey's and Ryan's scholastic history and found out what really happened to Jimmy Hoffa!!!  Okay, not really, but we went into depth about the advising process in the Psychology department and the importance of the army of peer advisers within this department.

So without further ado, to get in touch with Casey and his staff, you can call 503-725-3923 or email psyadvis@pdx.edu or you can drop by Cramer Hall room 360.

10.1.12 "May The EMSA Be With You"

(Cue Star Wars Theme Song)... The "May the EMSA Be With You" episode XXV?  Okay, enough with the puns, and back to the seriousness of TTA (Turntable Advising).

This week was a big one!  DJ Jamo and Super Student Nico left Thrillhouse and Great Scott with the task of hosting the Associate Vice President of Academic and Career Services at Portland State University, Mr. Dan Fortmiller (screams and applause fill the room).  The 20 or so minute interview with Mr. Fortmiller included a range of topics; including the "Advising Initiative" and "Mapping Project", both special projects near and dear to the heart of the Associate V.P., the changes Mr. Fortmiller has witnessed on campus in his years at PSU, and of course, the most important fact learned from the show, that if our guest could do anything else in his life, career-wise, he would be some sort of back-up musician for Santana, and it is for those little factoids that we are proud to give our audience a gift like Turntable Advising.

In all seriousness, Mr. Fortmiller was a wonderful guest, and has been a significant part of the PSU campus form many years.  We appreciate you Dan and it was a pleasure having you on the show.

If you would like to know more about the Advising Initiative or the Mapping Project at PSU, please follow these links:

Tune in next week for our College of Liberal Arts and Sciences Advising themed show (phew, that was a mouthful!), where our guests will be Mr. Robert Mercer, Assistant Dean, and Ben Alberts, Academic Adviser for CLAS.

See ya'll next week!

A New Year, A New VISION

Hey HEY hey! It's been a long time, yes? You've changed, we've changed, the leaves changed. Ah, sweet memories.

BUT ANYWAY, welcome to the New Year of Turntable Advising! If you're die-hard fan, you know that we recently kicked off our new year at KPSU. If you're a Die Hard fan, you know that the fifth installment of the crazy life of John McClane is coming soon to a theater near you. Unrelated to our show, but important nonetheless.

This week, we welcomed back all the PSU students, faculty and staff from the summer. Of course, we also wanted to send a big shout-out to all the new students, faculty and staff who are Vikings for the first time.

It was also the first time we had ALL of the DJ's back in the booth since the Spring! Great Scott, Thrillhouse, Jamo, and Nico were all in the studio bringing banter and information on the ones and twos.

We mostly focused on catching up from the past summer, looking forward to the new year, and talking about ways to enhance the beginning of your academic year as a student.

In the coming weeks, we'll be talking to some folks on campus about events, activities, and advice they would share with students. Maybe more importantly, we'll be maintaining and enhancing our social media presence!

Be sure to tune in next Monday (and every Monday, really) at 4:00 pm for our next episode, featuring a very special guest! (SPOILER ALERT: His first name is Dan.)

Happy Start of Fall Term!

A Blog Break...For Now

Hey there!

Turntable Advising will be taking a brief hiatus ONLY from this blog. You know, the perils of fame and all that. We'll still be doing the radio show LIVE every Monday from 4:00 to 5:00 pm. Any updates or recaps of the show will now be posted to our Facebook account (be sure to 'Like' us!), which you can find via this blog, or via Facebook (obviously).

Thanks for your continued support, and keep listening to the show!

And We Are Back!!! 4/16/12 Major Quest 3000

It's been awhile, but the blog is back for The Turntablizers of Turntable Advising.  This week, we had a surprise, last minute special guest of Mr. Micah Johnstone, a pillar of the Oregon community, recently completing and passing his Bar Exam, and who will soon be a member of the Oregon Bar Association.  We grilled Micah on his life path, discussing the ups and downs of his time at the University of Oregon, and how landscaping work in Alabama led him to his chosen professional path of working in the criminal law field.

Other banter included updates from DJ Jamo about current events happening on the PSU campus regarding Sexual Assault Awareness Month and the upcoming Bike Back the Night/Take Back the Night.  And once again, more of DJ Great Scott's relationship tidbits were discussed, including a follow up about IKEA shopping and living to tell the tale.  And on a side note, are the IKEA meatballs just not the same as they once were?  Something to ponder...

Check out all upcoming events for Sexual Assault Awareness Month at www.pdx.edu/wrc

Tune in next week where we will be Following the Green Brick Road to Student Leadership when we discuss Bike/Take Back the Night with a few different student leaders and discuss their pathways to success at PSU, and maybe we'll get Thrillhouse to talk about something interesting in his deep voice...  we'll just have to see about that.

Episode #9: Connect Yourself

We're doing all the leg work on these connections. For you.
I, DJ Nico got to produce my own show this week. It was both thrilling and anxiety-ridden. I was not sure how exactly I wanted to execute this particular topic. I think that it went fairly well. This week's show was themed around getting involved on-campus either through student organizations or student activities. We put a spotlight on Student Activities and Leadership Programs (SALP) here at PSU, and had a representative student leader, Rolan, guest-star and talk about his involvement. We also had a fellow orientation leader, Valery join us and give insight to balancing on-campus involvement and how to maintain productive involvement in a healthy way! We have such great student leaders. Thanks Rolan and Valery for joining us.

Getting involved in an activity on-campus helps you, as a student, get better grades, expand your social circles: possibly to even more diverse spaces, increase your "happiness quotient," and path a successful road to graduation through leadership positions. Four main points behind getting involved:
Don't fall victim!
  1. Connecting and navigating PSU. This is a big school and a lot of the time students feel disconnected. It is good to have mentors, any shape or form, that have your back and can give you tips on getting adjusted.
  2. Balance is important. I know I always manage to find a million ways to be involved on-campus and have to take a step back and acknowledge my current commitments and the adjustments that would need to be made if I tried to take on, uh, a million different on-campus activities. Make sure to maintain a balance that is productive and healthy, if you find yourself feeling as if you're being pulled at all ends you should consider reassessing your involvement and priorities! You're not Stretch Armstrong.
  3. Friends and identity. There are a lot of opportunities put together by SALP and other departments on campus for you to meet new people. PSU has over 30,000 students, and I can assuringly say there's a group of people that can't wait to meet you. Yeah, I'm corny, so what. There are also plenty of student organizations that range from Academic groups, Arts related, Multicultural, Political, Advocacy, and Spiritual interests. You are bound to find a group that speaks to how YOU want to get involved.
  4. Connecting your Academics to reality. Good grades and a well-maintained GPA are very important. But PSU wants to see and hear you involved on-campus. Your involvement reflects your commitment to maintaining your grades and successfully finishing school.
  5. Career skills and leaderships...are two peas in a pod. Leadership positions available all over campus let you grow into the confident, articulate, and unique individual that you are. Graduate schools, future career options, scholarships, and grants are looking for students who make time to get involved with their university's community. Before I got involved with the Orientation team, I would stress over class presentations and job interviews...now these are both things that I get excited about doing and interviewers feel my energy and excitement.
SALP has two events coming up in January, the Party Near The Park (Jan. 19) and the Leadership Conference (Jan. 20). To find more information about SALP, existing student organizations or upcoming events visit: salp.pdx.edu
